About Us

A Type Of Cloud is a letterpress studio and stationery label located in the Tweed Valley, Northern NSW, Australia. We create letterpress stationery that celebrates the written word, artful mark-making, and simplicity.

Each piece is printed by hand on one of four vintage presses, using hand-mixed inks and recycled, found, or sustainably made papers. We take great pride in crafting humble objects for everyday use: greeting cards, notebooks, sketchbooks, notecards, and paper ephemera that invite quiet moments of reflection, communication, and creativity.

We believe these are more than just paper goods—they're tools for living intentionally. In a busy world, they offer a moment of stillness and connection, encouraging you to write a journal entry, pen a note to someone you love, or discover who you are through the written word.

We also accept commissions that resonate with our studio values and aesthetics.

Although our explorations in stationery started in earnest in 2005, our letterpress story began in 2011 after a spontaneous late-night online press purchase, and has evolved, transformed, and grown as we have.

Originally trading as Olive & The Volcano, the studio has also been known as Olive Letterpress and most recently as Jo Olive Letterpress. Over the years, we've worked with inspiring creative clients, sold our stationery line throughout Australia and internationally, hosted workshops, and welcomed the public to our bricks-and-mortar store and open studio.

Now, with the studio returning to Jo's property in the hills of the verdant Tweed Valley, we continue on, creating goods and projects that champion the analogue and encourage experiences away from digital distraction.

Jo Olive is the founder, printer, stationery designer, and maker at A Type of Cloud studio.

Her love of letterpress began some time ago, first as a student of art history and then as a printmaker. Her fascination with paper and stationery surfaced early—as a child, she could be found selling handmade stationery from a small "shop" (aka basket) outside her family's motel in a seaside town, complete with envelopes adorned with dried flowers and heavily glittered cards.

Fast forward to today: her studio is home to four antique presses, a vintage guillotine, and copious stacks of papers, threads, needles, fabrics, bindings, inks, type, and printmaking tools.

After a short sabbatical, her studio is now open for business again as a petite printshop lovingly creating stationery goods, commissioned works, bookbinding projects, and artworks.

Her work has been featured in Uppercase Magazine, Inside Out, Home Beautiful, Country Style Magazine, Fashion Journal, Dolly, and Peppermint Magazine, and her workspace and practice has been captured for the Frankie Magazine blog, Etsy's Inspiring Workspaces series, and the Cathy Penton Atelier blog.

Jo has taught workshops in letterpress, bookbinding, collage, and printmaking, and her artwork has been acquired by the Ballina Shire Council Collection and can be found in private collections throughout Australia and internationally.
