Décollage (to unstick), is the opposite of collage, and involves creating an image by cutting, tearing, or removing pieces, as opposed to building an image. The French term décollage translates to ‘take-off’ or ‘to become unglued’.

In this fun hands-on workshop we'll explore this technique by firstly collecting our collage materials from our immediate surroundings in the heart of Murwillumbah; found papers, packaging, cardboard, promotional items, torn off posters and so on. Once back in the studio we'll start building our layered surfaces using intuition and chance, then work to "uncover" an image by removing layers. Students can keep their work experimental and abstracted, or they can use text, sketches or pattern to ground their work in representation. Participants will leave with a collection of de-collage works from A6 up to A4 size which can be resolved final pieces or a jumping off point for other artworks.

This class is suitable for all levels of experience from absolute beginners (Ages 16+) to creators who would like to explore a new technique.

All tools and materials will be supplied on the day and places are capped at six participants to ensure personal teaching and a nice calm atmosphere. A small break will be taken mid-way through the workshop to refresh, grab a coffee or a snack.

A Type of Cloud is inspired by warm words, simplicity, and marks made by hand. We draw on vintage ephemera, art history, and the written word to create everyday objects that invite quietude, joy, and connection.

Artist and printer Jo Olive begins each collection with pen to paper—working through collage, drawing, and relief printmaking before bringing designs to life on vintage presses. It's a hands-on process that connects us to printing history and the quiet pleasure of making things by hand.
