Originating in China and Korea, what we most commonly recognise today as Japanese Stab Stitch Binding became popular in the Edo Period of Japan (1615-1868) for binding an array of printed materials from woodcut print collections, to poetry books and literature.

Perfect for beginners and experienced binders alike, this hands-on workshop will introduce you to four classic Japanese bookbinding styles — the foundational Four-Hole binding, Noble, Hemp Leaf and Tortoise Shell patterns. Students will also be shown how to make traditional Japanese book blocks and decorative corner pieces known as kadogire.

You'll leave this workshop with four beautiful handmade notebooks, a set of templates for each sewing pattern, and detailed instructions so that you can easily keep creating at home.

All materials and tools are provided, however if you would like to bring specific papers to use, you are more than welcome. Places are limited to six participants for a relaxed, personalised experience.

A Type of Cloud is inspired by warm words, simplicity, and marks made by hand. We draw on vintage ephemera, art history, and the written word to create everyday objects that invite quietude, joy, and connection.

Artist and printer Jo Olive begins each collection with pen to paper—working through collage, drawing, and relief printmaking before bringing designs to life on vintage presses. It's a hands-on process that connects us to printing history and the quiet pleasure of making things by hand.
